Washington D.C. — Mayor Muriel Bowser is facing criticism after she tweeted a video on Sunday morning calling auto theft a “crime of opportunity,” following the death of 66-year-old Uber Eats driver Mohammed Anwar.

“Auto theft is a crime of opportunity. Follow these steps to reduce the risk of your vehicle becoming a target,” Bowser tweeted.

Following Bowser’s tweet, several people pointed out the hypocrisy and insensitivity of the mayor’s words.

Anwar “was in his car when 2 women murdered him in a carjacking gone wrong,” YouTube blogger and BlazeTV host, Lauren Chen pointed out. “I believe this is what’s called ‘victim blaming,’” Chen added.

“Horrible timing on this clearly scheduled tweet,” journalist Natalia Antonova tweeted. “And even if Mohammed Anwar wasn’t dead, carjackings are a plague in DC – there isn’t a lot you can do wrt risk reduction besides simply not driving a car.”

A 13-year-old and 15-year-old girl have been charged with the murder of Anwar after they hijacked his car, stunned him, and flipped the vehicle, NBC Washington reported.

The District of Columbia has seen an increase in carjackings since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, up from 142 carjackings in 2019 to 345 in 2020, The Hoya reported.

In a Feb. 9 press conference, D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee III announced that a task force had been created in order to address the rise in carjackings in the city.
